High Value Manufacturing Catapult bolsters cross-sector expertise with New Year board appointments

The High Value Manufacturing Catapult has announced the appointment of four new non-executive directors to their board.

With extensive experience shaping transformation across the manufacturing and technology sector, their experience and insights will be instrumental in advancing HVM Catapult’s mission to promote and accelerate innovation across UK manufacturing.

Frank Ludwig joined Jaguar Land Rover in 2019 as director of corporate strategy, business development and transformation and served as the company’s chief transformation officer. Since November 2022, Ludwig has been responsible for the strategy and performance of Jaguar Land Rover’s manufacturing, purchasing and supply chain operations. A dual German and British national, Ludwig has held several roles at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, BMW, MINI, and Porsche over the years, previously working in Goodwood, Oxford, Munich, Leipzig and Stuttgart.

Mandy Calvert has more than 30 years’ experience working in Life Sciences and Healthcare. She has held a series of senior roles at AstraZeneca leading major transformation projects including IT implementation, supply chain development and investment to aid pharmaceutical operations and manufacturing. Calvert also founded Fennix Pharmaceuticals and is a NED on the boards of the social care and housing providers the Guinness Partnership and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency. She is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Cambridge Judge Business School.

Dr Peter Thompson has been the chief executive of the National Physical Laboratory, the UK’s National Metrology Institute, since 2015. He was previously strategic advisor to the Ministry of Defence’s chief scientific adviser, deputy chief executive of the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory, and head of the Counter Terrorism, Science and Technology Centre.

Rob Shaw is chief of staff for Innovate UK where he previously held the role of finance director. Prior to joining Innovate UK, Shaw held senior roles within the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and HM Treasury.

The board appointment of Rob Shaw is made by Innovate UK, the UK’s innovation agency, in collaboration with HVM Catapult, consistent with the approach with each Catapult. HVM Catapult is established and supported by Innovate UK.
