World-Leading Engineers Honoured at Prestigious IET Achievement Awards
Published:  28 October, 2024

Renowned engineers and technologists from around the globe have been celebrated for their contributions to engineering and technology at the Institution of Engineering and Technology’s (IET) 2024 Achievement Awards. This year’s honours were awarded to 14 outstanding professionals, whose innovations have significantly advanced their fields.

One of the most distinguished accolades, the Mountbatten Medal, was awarded to Alan Weinberg in recognition of his pioneering work in space power systems. Weinberg, who served as a senior power electronics engineer at the European Space Agency for over two decades, developed pivotal technologies such as conductance control voltage regulation and the Sequential Switching Shunt Regulator (S3R) to manage solar cell arrays. He is also credited with inventing the widely-used Weinberg converter, integral to systems including the International Space Station. Reflecting on the award, Weinberg said, “I am truly honoured and thankful to receive this distinguished recognition from the IET. I was privileged to play a part in developing space satellite systems that will continue to benefit mankind.”

Professor Shu Yuen Ron Hui received the esteemed JJ Thomson Medal for his transformative advancements in wireless charging technology. His innovations led to the formation of the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) in 2008, which launched the Qi wireless charging standard in 2010. Hui’s work catalysed the adoption of wireless charging technology globally, from the introduction of the first commercial charging pad in 2011 to widespread adoption in cars, airports, and consumer electronics, including major smartphone brands. Hui expressed his appreciation, stating, “I am deeply honoured to receive the JJ Thomson Medal and humbled to join the ranks of so many distinguished recipients. Power electronics is an enabling technology for countless applications…this award will inspire more researchers to engineer a better world.”

The IET Achievement Awards celebrate extraordinary contributions across engineering, technology, and science, honouring leaders and innovators from diverse sectors.
