Rack-clad automated warehouses at the heart of new healthcare facility
Published:  04 February, 2016

Jungheinrich’s Systems & Projects Division has provided a turnkey solution for global healthcare company, Grifols - completing two highly automated rack-clad warehouses at the heart of the company’s new worldwide operations in Dublin.

Officially opened in October by Richard Bruton, Ireland's Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, the new facility is a cornerstone of Grifols’ international growth strategy and represents a total investment in the project of $100m.

The buildings, which occupy 22,000m2 on a site measuring 11 hectares, have been designed to facilitate the global distribution of plasma-derived products supporting operations in over 67 countries by maximising the flexibility and security of supplies.

One of the new warehouses on the site is a -35°C cold store standing 21 metres high, while the other is a +5°C structure that reaches 31 metres at its highest point.

Both installations came under Jungheinrich’s remit and were specifically designed as rack clad structures.

Jungheinrich was responsible for the installation of the racking, insulated cladding panels, stacker cranes, conveyor systems technology and the warehouse management system – which is bespoke to meet Grifols’ specific requirements, as per Grifols Engineering S.A. instruction.

Grifols has been working to improve people’s health and well-being through the development of life-saving plasma medicines, diagnostics systems and hospital pharmacy products for more than 70 years.

Steve Richmond, Jungheinrich’s director of systems and projects, commented: “Throughout the design and build phases of the project Grifols had the peace of mind of knowing that the critical elements of the new facility were all under the management of Jungheinrich’s total solution offering.” He added: “We are clearly delighted to have been responsible for the successful implementation of such a prestigious and unique project.”
