Seeing clearly – specifying new safety eyewear

Workplace eye injuries can be life changing, and yet, are often wholly preventable. Yet, despite safety eyewear being one of the most important pieces of personal protective equipment, a ‘one style suits all’ approach is often wrongly taken. Sangeeta Aeri, technical manager at Supertouch highlights the key factors that should always be considered when it comes to specifying new safety eyewear.

Achieving efficiency and compliance

Organisations operating hazardous areas – otherwise known as Ex-rated or Ex Environments - face a variety of challenges including compliance with the latest legislation, and advances in technology. Mark James, RS product manager, automation and control, for Northern Europe reports.

Wearable technology

Whether it’s smart watches or fitness trackers, e-textiles or connected eyewear, wearables have entered the mainstream and taken consumer markets by storm. Such devices come with a host of practical functions, interweaving cutting-edge technology into our daily lives. Cleo Cabuz, vice president of engineering, Honeywell Industrial Safety, looks at the key to a safer and more productive workplace.

New PPE Regulation - a welcome health check

The key European rules regulating the equipment used to protect workers have been left unchanged for more than 20 years. However, a new Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Regulation (2106/425) will introduce key changes to the way PPE is manufactured, sold and imported within the European Union. Irrespective of Brexit, the legislation offers UK manufacturers of PPE, employers and safety managers a unique opportunity to reassess occupational health and safety. Olivier Touchais, global manager for general safety at Honeywell Industrial Safety, reports.

Make the right connection to safety

As industrial operations become ever more challenging, complex and dispersed, safety threats can emerge suddenly and without warning. Never has it been more important for businesses to access real-time safety intelligence. Armed with such critical data, safety managers can make better informed decisions that protect workers and prevent a major incident, maximise uptime and increase productivity. Mahesh Joshi, European product marketing leader for gas detection at Honeywell Industrial Safety, reports.

Make the right noises

Noise-induced hearing loss continues to be a major issue for many industries across the globe. In the UK alone, research estimates that over 1 million people are exposed to noise levels at work that may be harmful. Some 17,000 people in the UK suffer deafness, tinnitus or other hearing deficiencies caused by excessive noise at work. As such increasingly stringent noise at work noise and environmental noise legislation regulations have been put into place. PWE reports.

Ivan Zytynski, marketing director for The Safety Shower People, considers some of the features that make a good shower and why they are worth paying extra for. This is not a discussion about how showers meet the various ANSI and EN standards as it is assumed that meeting these requirements is an absolute minimum requirement for any purchasing decision. Instead Zytynski discusses the features that go above and beyond the American and EU design standards.
