EEF Photography Awards 2013 unveiled

Published:  24 January, 2014

The winners and runners-up of the EEF ‘Made in Britain’ Photography Awards 2013 have been unveiled at a ceremony at the House of Commons in London.

Entrants were challenged to submit photos that championed the spirit of manufacturing in Britain. Almost 800 photos were submitted from across the country and 77 were shortlisted. The competition was sponsored by Canon, Lombard and the ERA Foundation.

The winner of the professional category was Mike Smith’s ‘Completion’, a photograph of a newly completed HD Plough manufactured by Soil Machine Dynamics in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Robert Yeatman was named runner-up for his shot of the iconic Vis Vires Ultegra Bike, a technologically advanced road bike. Steve Morgan was also highly commended for his photograph of an engineer operating renewable energy equipment at JDR.

Shane Butler won the amateur category with ‘Molten Man 2.0’, a powerful image of a technician tending a vat of hot molten metal at Chamberlin & Hill foundries in Walsall. Alan Burke from Sheffield was named runner-up for his captivating image of a mill being heat treated.

The amateur mobile device category, new to the awards this year, was won by Robert Watkins for his ‘Perf-ect…’ shot of a large perforated steel filter being welded at Croft Filters in Warrington.

The young photographer category also produced many photographs showcasing not only the best of British manufacturing but also budding photographers. Sophia Campion won with her colourful image of a bundle of newly made lightweight cotton socks from family company Corgi Hosiery in Wales, and Sam Doyle from Norwich was runner-up for his sleek shot of a Lotus car production line.

The range in colour and theme of the winners and runners-up, and indeed all of the shortlisted entries, encapsulated the message of the EEF Photography Awards; that British manufacturing is diverse and a part of both Britain’s heritage and future.

Terry Scuoler, chief executive at EEF, commented: “Congratulations to the winners, runners-up and everyone who was shortlisted in the awards. Manufacturing is exciting and constantly evolving, and we are proud of all of our entrants who have helped us redefine the public perception of manufacturing with their eclectic range of images.”

Barrie Street, customer marketing manager at Canon UK, explained: “This competition provides people with the opportunity to express their passion for the manufacturing sector through the power of image, and it’s clear to see from the quality of the winning entries it has been a real success. Canon is truly proud to sponsor these awards and I would like to congratulate all of the winners, runners-up and everyone that took part.”
