Carlsberg contract - probably the largest investment in its history
Published:  21 July, 2007

Carlsberg Breweries has awarded SSI Schaefer the contract to design, plan and install a new high-performance, production and distribution centre, with more than 75,000 storage positions in Fredericia, Denmark - it will mark as one of the largest investment projects in the history of the Carlsberg Brewery.

SSI Schaefer has been given the contract due to its knowledge and expertise of the latest storage techniques and technology to accommodate today's fast-moving logistics industry. Carlsberg were looking for a new modern storage system to implement within their new production and distribution plant, once a decision had been reached to move everything from its traditional plant in Copenhagen and combine all processes within a centre close to Fredericia.

The company will take on the complete design, planning and implementation stages of the new storage system installation that will cover an approximate area of one kilometre squared. The new storage system will feature a steel rack construction and extensive pallet conveyor technology. Warehouse management will be controlled via a Warehouse Management System, equipped with special functions for yard-management, control of replenishments for production and order picking, as well as sequential allocation of issued goods.

SSI Schaefer will create a high bay warehouse with 18 aisles, with a length of 114m and 70,000 storage positions. Static equipment will be designed for the single-deep storage of heavy 1000 kilo pallets. The storage process designed for a throughput of storing 700 pallets and retrieving 800 pallets an hour will be handled by 18 storage and retrieval machines with double telescopic forks. An additional 'in-house rack" with eight aisles and a capacity of 6000 storage positions for pallets with a weight of 500 kilos will also be set up.

More than 1600 individual elements will be integrated in the conveyor systems, including pallet stackers and de-stackers, pallet stacking stations, 50 vertical conveyors and eight separate shuttle vehicles. Existing buildings will be connected via bridges and a monorail will connect the warehouse and order picking areas to the bottling plant.

The installation is due for completion in 2008. SSI Schaefer will then provide a full maintenance and service contract to ensure professional after-sales support for the Carlsberg Breweries and plant itself.
